CRANHAM, a pleasant scattered village, on an eminence, five miles E.S.E. of Romford, has in its parish 385 souls, and 1875A. of land, including 37A. of roads and waste. It was anciently called Bishop's Okendon or Wokendon, and its manor Was held succesively by the Curson, Trendle, Selman, Mordaunt, Petre, and Wright families, and, was purchased in the latter part of the last century by Sir Thomas H. Apreece, Bart. Samuel Gurney, Esq., is now lord of the manor. H. J. Hance, Esq., of Bellevue House, and a few smaller owners, have estates here. R W. Bunter, Esq., occupies Cranham Hall, an ancient mansion,with pleasant grounds. The Church (All Saints) is a small antique structure, and the benefice is a rectory, valued in K.B. at £13.13s. 4d, and in 1831
at £564 It is in the patronage of St. John's College, Oxford, and incumbency of the Rev. Chas. Rew, B.D., who has 40A. IR. 27P. of glebe, and a large white brick Rectory House, built in 1790, by Dr. G. Strahan, a former incumbent and patron. The tithes were commuted in 1841 for £660 per annum. Post via Romford.
